Photography for a Good Cause

Here are seven programs for youth that use photography to make a difference.

July 2007

We receive many letters asking about charities involving youth and photography, here is a list of a few that we've found.

US Visual Arts Programs:
Marwen (Chicago Based): Provides high quality visual arts education (including photography), college planning, and career development programs -- all free of charge -- to Chicago's under-served youth in grades 6-12. (www.marwen.org)

Young Audiences, Inc.:
Arts-in-education services. Advancement of all of the arts in education, including photography. YAI's mission and goal is to help make the arts an essential part of young people's education. Young Audiences advances the artistic and educational development of public school students by bringing young people together with professional artists of all disciplines to learn, create and participate in the arts. (www.youngaudiences.org)

International programs:
Kids with Cameras: Founded by Zana Briski, the foundation was born from her work in Calcutta teaching children photography (the subject of the academy award winning documentary “Born into Brothels”). Their mission: “Kids with Cameras is a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to marginalized children in communities around the world. We use photography to capture the imaginations of children, to empower them, building confidence, self-esteem and hope. We share their vision and voices with the world through exhibitions, books, websites and film. We are committed to furthering their general education beyond photography either by linking with local organizations to provide scholarships or by developing our own schools with a focus on leadership and the arts.” They have workshops in Calcutta, Haiti, Jerusalem and Cairo. SOS Children's Photography Project:
The study used photography to help children come to terms with violence in their past and express themselves. The children who took the photos and gave the comments are cared for by SOS Children in Colombia, India, Nicaragua and Thailand. The report discusses ways of getting children to express feelings using photos and words. (www.soschildrensvillages.org.uk)

PhotoVoice:
Since 1999 PhotoVoice has initiated more than 15 projects working in 12 different countries with over 1000 beneficiaries, pioneering the use of photography with refugee groups, street children, orphans, the homeless, HIV/ AIDS sufferers and special need groups. Countries that PhotoVoice has worked in include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the United Kingdom. (www.photovoice.org).

Children's charities that use photography to raise money:
Photocharity: raise funds and awareness for charitable organizations that empower youth to make better choices. This is accomplished through music, photography, and other fundraising events. Since 2001, Photocharity has raised over $900,000 to save homeless youth. (www.photocharity.com)

Supports photographers both adults and youth:
Photographers Without Borders: Supporter of both amateur and professional photographers. Through their scholarship program, they help amateur photography students achieve their education goals and hone their talents. Their photography auction gives professional photographers national exposure and a chance to showcase some of their work while helping us to raise funds. (www.photographerswithoutborders.org)
