Samsung has announced two affordable new point-and-shoots, the 13.6-megapixel SL310W and 10.2-megapixel SL201. The two models have 2.7-inch LCDs and a very similar design. Among the features that give the SL310W its higher price tag are a 28mm-100mm (35mm equivalent) 3.6x zoom lens, and a Dual Image Stabilization function that combines optical and digital stabilization. The SL201 has a narrower 3x zoom lens and digital stabilization only.
Both cameras are designed for easy automatic shooting, with 11 scene modes, face detection, and built-in help features. Their shutter speeds range from 1/1500 to 8 seconds. The SL201 has a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 1600, while the SL310W goes up to ISO 3200. The SL310W adds features such as Smile Shot, which automatically releases the shutter when someone in front of the camera smiles, and Blink Detection, which alerts the photographer if someone blinks during a shot. Both models offer Samsung's Self Portrait mode, which uses face detection to prevent the camera from taking a shot if the subject isn't framed properly when the photographer can't see the LCD.
The SL310W improves upon the SL201's more rudimentary video-capture mode with the ability to pause and resume recording during a single clip, use optical zoom during recording, and edit clips in-camera.
The $229.95 SL310W and $169.95 SL201 will be available in September 2008.
