Online photo gallery site SmugMug has added a new image storage option called SmugVault to its advanced set of features. SmugVault allows SmugMug subscribers at all levels to upload RAW files, PSDs, TIFFs, and other file types for archiving in Amazon's S3 data banks.
SmugVault links uploaded image files in formats such as RAW and TIFF to displayed JPEGs with the same file name, making it easy to locate archived files and download them from SmugMug galleries. When no corresponding JPEG is available, SmugMug attempts to generate a viewable JPEG from the RAW file for gallery display.
Photographers can use SmugMug's standard upload tools to add files to their SmugVault, after registering for the added service through Amazon S3. SmugMug guides the subscriber through the simple registration process.
Pricing for SmugVault starts with a $1 monthly base fee in addition to the regular SmugMug annual subscription price. Each gigabyte stored costs 22 cents per month. There are also data transfer fees of 30 cents per gigabyte to upload, and 51 cents per gigabyte to download. The service currently limits file sizes to 512 megabytes, although SmugMug plans to raise that limit substantially in the future.
