| The Western Digital My Passport Elite portable USB hard drive. |
Western Digital has launched a new line of portable USB hard drives that come loaded with a range of software tools that can be used for automatic backup of and remote access to digital photo collections. The compact My Passport Elite Portable USB Drives weigh less than 5 ounces and are available in 250 and 320 GB capacities. The drives are powered via their USB connections, obviating the need for a separate power adapter, and feature an external capacity gauge that shows space remaining.
The Passport Elite Portables and included backup software are compatible with both Mac and Windows systems, and the drives also come loaded with several software tools that are available to Windows users only. These include 128-bit encryption for secure storage, Western Digital software for setting folders and other items to be synchronized automatically between the drive and a connected computer when changes are made, and MioNet software. MioNet is a subscription-based service that allows users to access the contents of any PC with MioNet software installed from a remote Internet-connected computer. MioNet subscribers can access photo collections and other files on remote computers by connecting one of the Passport Elite drives to any PC.
The $169.99 250GB drive and $199.99 320GB drive are available with Bronze, Titanium, Westminster Blue, and Cherry Red finishes from Western Digital's Web site and other retailers.
