Phase One and Mamiya have announced a new medium format digital camera body that uses an open component platform to be compatible with a wide range of lenses and backs. The platform was jointly developed by the two companies, and the camera body employing it will be sold as the Phase One 645 Camera and Mamiya 645AFDIII.

Compatible lenses include Mamiya's 645 and D series, Hasselblad V series, and Pentacon Six lenses. Compatible backs include digital backs from Mamiya, Leaf, and Phase One, as well as film backs. The camera body has a molded grip, an integrated eyepiece viewfinder, and a shutter-speed range of 1/4000 second to 60 minutes. According to Mamiya, it employs a new coreless motor to achieve fast, quiet autofocus.

Mamiya and Phase One say they will provide full details on the new camera when it becomes available in Spring 2008.
