Smith Micro Launches StuffIt Deluxe 12

The latest version of Smith Micro's Windows compression software offers new technology for archiving and sending TIFFs, JPEGs, and other image files.

March 14, 2008

Smith Micro has launched a version of its archiving and compression software that offers new image-file compression technology. StuffIt Deluxe 12 offers optimized compression of 24-bit Photoshop, TIFF, PNG, and BMP image files, and integrates with Adobe PhotoShop CS2 and CS3 via a plug-in. The plug-in allows photographers to open files from or save them to compressed archives, and to burn files to a disc or upload them to an FTP server directly from Photoshop. Disc-writing options include high-capacity formats such as Blu-ray. StuffIt Deluxe 12 also supports lossless compression of high-resolution JPEGs.

According to Smith Micro, its compression technology is superior to competing options for media archiving, such as Zip, because it is optimized for handling media file types. In addition to handling image files, StuffIt Deluxe 12 offers improved compression of MP3s, PDFs, and Microsoft Office documents, as well as integration with Office programs. StuffIt can be set up to perform automatic backups, and provides an interface for browsing the contents of compressed archives without expanding them. Image files in compressed archives can be browsed as thumbnails.

StuffIt Deluxe 12 is available for $49.99 or as a $19.99 upgrade from Smith Micro's Web site.
