HP has introduced a new 13-inch-wide inkjet printer. The Photosmart Pro B8850 Photo Printer outputs images at sizes up to 13x44 inches with eight HP Vivera pigment-based inks. Its maximum resolution is 4800 dpi, and it can print on paper and other media up to 0.7 mm thick.
Among the B8850's notable features is print-control and color-management integration with Adobe Photoshop CS3, and with Photoshop CS2 via a plug-in. The Vivera ink set includes Photo Black and Matte Black inks, which the printer accommodates without any need to swap out cartridges. Other features include an automatic calibration system and HP's Electrostatic Drop Detection system, which the company claims minimizes ink waste by monitoring the print head and automatically cleaning individual nozzles as needed. Less efficient systems require a manually controlled cleaning process that flushes ink out of all nozzles to clear a clog.
The B8850 will be available in March 2008 for an estimated $549. The printer will come with HP Photosmart Essential software for editing, organizing, and printing photos.
