The New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) has released a revised proposal for rules governing permits for filming and photography in the city. A previous set of proposed rules was withdrawn in August 2007 after a public outcry against the restrictions they would have placed on shoot durations and tripod use. Those restrictions have been removed from the current proposal, which requires photographers and videographers to obtain a permit and insurance only if their activities will obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic, or will involve the use of equipment other than handheld gear and tripods.
The MOFTB will hold a public hearing on the proposed rules on December 13, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., and will accept comments on them through that date. Comments may be sent to message@film.nyc.gov. The MOFTB requests (but does not require) that those planning to attend the hearing notify its office at least five days in advance. The hearing will be held at the offices of the Economic Development Corporation, 110 William Street, 4th floor (between Fulton and John Streets).
The full text of the proposed permit rules and a Q&A document about them are available on the MOFTB Web site.
