Leica has announced a new series of prime lenses for its film and digital rangefinder cameras. The company says that the new Summarit-M optics mark a return to "a greater focus on its core competencies in optics manufacturing," and will be designed and manufactured at Leica's main factory in Solms, Germany.
The four lenses that will launch the new Summarit-M series are a 35mm and a 50mm, each with a minimum focus distance of 2.6 feet, and a 75mm and 90mm with a minimum focus distance of 3 and 3.3 feet, respectively. All of them have an f/2.5 maximum aperture and a Leica M mount. The two wider lenses take E39-type filters and the two longer ones take E46s.
The Summarit-M lenses will be available singly and in sets of two, three, or four, in late November 2007. Leica has not yet announced pricing, but says it aims to make the optics affordable for a broad range of photographers. Each lens will come with a metal lens cap, a lens hood, and a velour pouch. All-metal lens hoods will be sold separately.
