Sony has introduced a new portable DVD burner. The DVDirect VRD-MC5 can receive images from a connected camcorder, VCR, or digital video recorder to create DVDs without being connected to a computer. The device also incorporates slots for Memory Stick, SD/MMC, CompactFlash, and xD-Picture Card media for burning stills to disc. According to Sony, the MC5 takes about 8 to 10 minutes to burn a full disc of images.

The MC5's 2.5-inch LCD lets users view images and select the ones they want recorded. In addition to recording both standard-definition video and high-definition AVCHD footage, the burner can record JPEGs for archiving and assemble photos and MP3 audio files into slideshows with sound. Sony claims that slideshow image quality has been improved over previous DVD burners. Each recorded disc can hold as many as 2000 image files.

The VRD-MC5 will be available in August for about $230. Further information on the device is available on Sony's Web site.
