Fantasea Line has released a new underwater housing for Nikon's D40 and D40x digital SLRs. The FD-40X is rated to a depth of 200 feet, and features an interchangeable port system to accommodate a wide variety of lenses. Its flash sync port is a five-pin Nikonos system, which allows full TTL coverage with a compatible flash housing, such as Fantasea's FSB800 for the Nikon SB800 flash. The housing also features a magnified optical viewfinder, and is compatible with numerous accessories, including strobe flex arms, ball-and-joint arms, and port brackets.
According to Fantasea, the main seal between the housing's front and back halves is a gasket, while the lens port attaches with a double O-ring. The camera slides into the FD-40X housing on a specially designed tray, then is locked in with stainless steel latching buckles on the back door. The FD-40X's controls are constructed from stainless steel shafts and springs, and are sealed by double O-rings. Its control knobs and buttons are made of molded polycarbonate.
Controls available on the FD-40X include:
- Shutter release
- Power switch
- Exposure compensation/aperture
- Shooting information
- Zoom port
- Auto exposure/focus lock/protect
- Mode dial
- Command dial
- Multi selector
- Delete
- Playback zoom/setting
- Thumbnail/help
- Menu
- Playback
The FD-40X is available in late May 2007 for $1099 from Fantasea's Web site with a standard port for an 18mm-55mm mm zoom lens. It comes with a one-year flood insurance policy for the camera used with it.
