Canon has announced two new 8-megapixel PowerShot digital cameras today powered by the Digic III engine and incorporating face detection technologies. The Canon PowerShot S5 IS is an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) camera with an optically stabilized 12x zoom with an equivalent 36-432mm lens. The PowerShot SD850 IS Digital Elph features the same sensor in a much more compact camera design with a 4x zoom (35-140mm equivalent.)
Both cameras feature a 2.5 inch LCD, which on the S5 IS is articulated for composing photos at challenging angles.
The S5 IS also feature on-the-fly movie capture via a dedicated button, regardless of still shooting mode. Face Detection AF and autoexposure are among the movie mode offerings. Additionally, still frames during video recording are captured at full 8-megapixel resolution.
The SD850 IS borrows a page from the Lensbaby Creative Aperture kit, with the Creative Light Effect shooting mode, which turns specular highlights into hearts, stars and more -- one of 18 shooting modes, including full manual included in this camera. The SD850 also features an optical viewfinder -- a rarity in compact digicams these days.
Both cameras are touted as being "Windows Vista Ready" without any additional downloads or upgrades.
Measuring 4.6 inches long, 3.15 inches high, 3.06 inches wide and weighing in at less than a pound, the S5 IS will sell for a suggested $499.00 and will be available in early July. The SD850 IS is 3.56-inches long, 2.22-inches high and 1.04-inches wide, and weighs in at only 5.82 ounces per manufacturer specifications. Suggested retail price is $399.
