Sony Announces Availability of Pro-HG Duo Cards

Sony has announced that it will start selling its new Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo cards and a compatible ExpressCard slot adapter in August. According to the company, the new cards will offer data transfer up to three times faster than standard Memory Stick Pro Duo cards.

Pro-HG Duo cards have eight connector pins instead of the four that other memory stick types use, providing an 8-bit parallel interface. Sony claims that when used with devices that support 8-bit transfer -- including the new ExpressCard adapter -- the cards will provide transfer speeds of up to 30 megabytes per second. They are also compatible with 4-bit interfaces, but will function at lower speeds.

The Pro-HG Duo cards will be available in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB capacities for prices of about $60, $90 and $150, respectively. The ExpressCard adapter will cost about $80.
