Sigma Upgrades SD14 Firmware

Version 1.01 of the digital SLR's firmware corrects numerous flaws and adds flash photography options.

Sigma Upgrades SD14 Firmware
One of our key criticisms of the Sigma SD9 and SD10 was that neither captured JPEG files. The SD14 ($1,600, estimated street, body only), Sigma's first new DSLR in three years, captures either JPEGs or RAW files, although there's no RAW + JPEG mode. Learn more from our Hands On Review.

Sigma has released a new version of the firmware for its SD14 digital SLR. Version 1.01 makes sensor cleaning possible when the camera is running on battery power and improves image display quality in review mode. The upgrade corrects a number of flaws in the previous version, including overexposure problems, wireless flash malfunctioning, LCD flicker, incompatibility with some FAT16-formatted CompactFlash cards, failure to tag Adobe RGB images properly, and camera freeze-ups.

The new firmware also expands the flash-sync options for the SD14's aperture-priority mode, making slow-sync flash possible. It provides two sync selections that respectively use shutter-speed ranges of 30-1/180 second and 1/60-1/180 second. However, the implementation of these features appears to be less than optimal. The new documentation instructs users to press the camera's function button eight times and then hold it while selecting the desired flash mode with a dial. It also notes that while the top shutter speed available is 1/180 second, the status display will show 1/200.

SD14 owners can download the new firmware for free from Sigma's Web site.
