PMA: Kingston Announces New Memory Cards and Readers

From the PMA Expo in Las Vegas, Kingston today announced three new 8-gigabyte secure digital high-capacity memory cards and two new 4-gigabyte SDHC cards. The 8-gigabyte cards will be available with Class 2, 4 and 6 speed ratings (the Class 2 has a minimum DTR of 2 megabytes per second, the Class 4 has a minimum DTR of 4 megabytes per second, etc.), and the 4-gigabyte cards will be available with Class 4 and 6 ratings.

Kingston also announced its new DataTraveler Reader, which combines a USB Flash drive with a memory card reader. The DataTraveler includes a SD/MMC expansion slot for reading nine different Flash memory card formats, including SDHC, and is available in storage capacities of 1 gigabyte, 2 gigabytes and 4 gigabytes. It is compatible with both Mac (OS 10 or higher) and Windows (2000, XP and Vista), and SD, SDHC, miniSD, microSD, MMC, MMCplus, RS-MMC, MMCmobile and MMCmicro formats.

For example, a Class 2 SDHC card has a minimum DTR of 2MB/sec, while a Class 6 SDHC card has a minimum DTR of 6MB/sec. The higher capacities and speeds of the SDHC format optimizes SDHC-compatible devices running MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and other high quality video compression used by consumer HD and DVD video.
