PMA: Nikon Announces DX Telephoto Zoom Lens
The compact 55-200mm DX-format lens is equipped with optical image stabilization, an ED element, and Nikon's Silent Wave Motor AF system.

Nikon has introduced a compact new telephoto zoom lens. The 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor is made exclusively for Nikon digital SLRs that use the company's DX sensor format. It offers a focal-length range with the same angle of view as an 82.5mm-300mm lens on a 35mm film camera.
The lens is equipped with Nikon's Vibration Reduction optical image stabilization system, an extra-low dispersion (ED) element that reduces chromatic aberration, and Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology, which the company claims makes focusing faster, quieter, and more precise. The lens also has an internal focusing design so that its external physical dimensions remain the same when the focal length is adjusted.
The 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens will be available in April 2007 for an estimated price of $249.95.

Engineered exclusively for use with Nikon's DX format digital SLR cameras, including the D80, D40 and recently announced D40x, this new lens approximates the picture angle characteristics of an 82.5-300mm lens on a 35mm film SLR camera.
