Olympus has added a new ultracompact point-and-shoot to its Stylus line. The 7.1-megapixel Stylus 780 offers an f/3.3-5.0, 36mm-180mm 5x zoom lens (35mm equivalent) and a 230,000-pixel, 2.5-inch LCD with a moderately wide 140-degree viewing angle. The 780's metal body is sealed against moisture and dust with rubber gaskets. The camera also incorporates a sensor-based optical image stabilization system and uses Olympus's new TruePic III image processor to improve image quality and performance.

This Stylus is designed for automatic shooting and doesn't provide manual or priority exposure controls, but it does offer numerous fine-tuning features. They include spot autofocus and metering, face-detection autofocus and autoexposure, light-sensitivity settings as high as ISO 2500, a Bright Capture feature for improving low-light image quality, and a live histogram display. The 780 has a shutter-speed range of 1/2000 to 4 seconds. It offers 23 shooting modes and records smooth VGA-resolution video with sound. The camera's continuous-shooting mode can capture 3.5 3-megapixel shots per second in 11-frame bursts (or 1.1 7-megapixel photos per second in 6-frame bursts). However, it's notable that the 780's panorama mode requires an Olympus-brand xD-Picture Card to be installed.

In review mode, you can improve photos on the 780 by opening up dark shadows and removing redeye. It's also possible to preview effects and image-parameter adjustments before taking a photo with the camera's Perfect Shot Preview mode, and to get shooting advice from its built-in help features.

The Stylus 780 will be available with a black or silver finish in May 2007, for an estimated street price of $349.99.
