Canon has introduced two new compact PowerShot A-series point-and-shoot cameras. The A560 and A570IS offer 7.1-megapixel resolution; an f/2.6-5.5, 35mm-140mm (35mm equivalent) 4x zoom lens; an optical viewfinder, and a 115,000-pixel, 2.5-inch LCD. Both cameras also use Canon's new DIGIC III image processor to enhance performance and image quality in both photo and video modes.
Both cameras feature a shutter-speed range of 1/2000 to 15 seconds, spot and center-weighted metering modes, and a drive mode that shoots at 1.7fps when a high-speed SD card is installed. The cameras' top light sensitivity setting is ISO 1600. Other notable features include selectable nine-point face-detection, and center-spot autofocus; custom white balance; and in-camera redeye removal.
As its name indicates, the A570IS is distinguished from the A560 by its optical image stabilization system. The A570IS also provides manual and priority modes in addition to the automatic shooting modes offered by both new A-series models, and it's compatible with lens converters and Canon's new WPDC12 underwater housing.
The A560 and A570IS capture smooth VGA-resolution video with sound. They adjust exposure and white balance continuously during video capture to compensate for changing conditions, which is not a given in cameras that are not made primarily for video capture. The cameras can also attach voice annotations to photos.
The A560 and A570IS run on AA batteries and will be available in March 2007 for retail prices of $229.99 and $279.99, respectively.
