Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced its DaVinci technology, optimized for the digital camera market. The technology includes a new highly flexible processor and a software suite for developers that simulates a full digital camera system. According to TI, a number of companies are offering camera-specific algorithms that can be easily incorporated into the DaVinci chipset to speed up product development.
“Offering DaVinci technology specifically for the digital still camera market underscores our efforts to be more than a chip provider and shows our commitment to this space,” said Kanika Ferrell, U.S. marketing manager, digital camera solutions group, TI.
The company claims that DaVinci offers three times the performance of its previous processors, and that cameras using the new processor based on DaVinci technology will offer higher image quality. The chipset will work with sensors up to 16MP in resolution. Plus, TI says, it offers rapid processing speeds for both still shots and high-definition (HD) video, while still leaving processing power for digital camera manufacturers to add their own intellectual property. Other features that the new processor offer include: instant red-eye removal, noise filtering at high ISO, high-quality prints extracted from video, video and image stabilization, in-camera editing, wireless transmission, plus other options.
