Christopher Anderson has won the Magazine Photographer of the Year award at the 64th Pictures of the Year International contest. Anderson, a Magnum photographer, has captured the human side of the front lines in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon and Venezuela. His personal style of photography, which he calls "shooting stories at eye level," has garnered him work in publications such as The New York Times Magazine and U.S. News and World Report. Judges of photography competitions have also heaped on the praise: In 2000, he was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal; in 2001, he was named Kodak's Young Photographer of the Year; in 2003, he took home second place in the Magazine Photographer of the Year category at the 60th POYi competition; and just last week he won one of the Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography for his photographs documenting the socialist revolution in Latin America.
Also at the POYi competition, The New York Times's Tyler Hicks was named Newspaper Photographer of the Year. His photos documented the rehabilitation of U.S. military personnel severely wounded in Iraq, military action in Afghanistan, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, and the streets of Camden, N.J., one of the country's poorest and most dangerous cities.
Other POYi winners include Yoon S. Byun of Ohio University for the Community Awareness Award; Renee C. Byer of the Sacramento Bee for the World Understanding Award; Jose Cendon, a freelance photographer, for magazine issue reporting story; Farah Nosh of Getty Images/Time magazine for magazine portrait; Linus Meyer, a freelance photographer, for magazine feature picture; Redux photographer Q. Sakamaki, on assignment for Newsweek, for magazine general news reporting; Dar Yasin of The Associated Press for magazine spot news; Dean Curtis of the Springfield News-Ledger for newspaper feature picture; Lisa Krantz of the San Antonio Express-News for newspaper portrait; Mohammed Ballas of The Associated Press for newspaper spot news; Donald Miralle of Getty Images for sports portfolio; and Andrew Craft of the Fayetteville Observer for newspaper general news reporting.
