PowerHouse Books sends out so many press releases it's hard to know exactly what to make of all the company's goings on. Ever since the New York-based photo and art book publisher got booted out of its Manhattan office and gallery space earlier this year, the place has been exploding with news of powerHouse-branded imprints, portfolio reviews, and workshops, all of which is thoroughly documented on the company blog.
One of the more interesting developments to come out of the recent flurry of news is pHytonics.net, an online-only gallery and print sale outlet for emerging and established artists.
"pHytonics gives us the chance to reach out to and support in a meaningful way artists that we would otherwise not be able to work with, and increase our brand profile at the same time," powerHouse Managing Editor Nicholas Weist says in the latest release. "In just the first three months, viewers will see work by some of today's most compelling young artists from here and abroad, unpublished portfolios from powerHouse artists, and experiments in multimedia collaboration."
The plan is to launch a new gallery each week, with work by Lisa Kereszi, Carrie Levy, Chris Brandt, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and others already scheduled. First up is a series of humorous self-portraits by William Lamson, a photographer currently completing an MFA in photography at Bard College.
Daniel Power, Sara Rosen and company are definitely on to something. Stay tuned.
