Last spring I threw a handful of zinnia seeds into the garden and hoped for the best. I was more than excited about the life that sprang from the earth, weeks later. Over the course of the summer, the flowers grew taller than 4 feet. I discovered a praying mantiss one morning while cutting flowers to fill a vase.
