Solar Halo
By Lita Kishbaugh
While enjoying a float in my pool last weekend I looked up to see what appeared to be a rainbow around the sun. Never having seen anything like this before, I ran for my camera and started snapping. After researching this phenomenon I found that it is called a Solar Halo which is caused by refraction of sunlight through the edges of six-sided ice crystals in high clouds.
