Black-Necked Stilt at Sunrise
By Chuck Murphy
One afternoon, I tried to get close to Stilts feeding on the mudflats. The birds were wary and wouldn’t let me get close, so I got up at 4:15 the next morning. Before the sun came up, I waded out and planted my tripod in the muck to be in place at sunrise. My trick worked: I remained stationary as the sun rose, and since I only made small, slow movements to aim and fire the shutter, the birds just thought I was part of the scenery. I waited for this reflection and got the shot I wanted.
