This photo was taken in Singapore Botanic Garden, nature lighting, no back drop, minimum photo shop process. The trick is the metering. Direct metering from Camera will normally give a bright background. I like to make the lotus standout and darken the background. -1.3 stops was used. This trick can bring out effects that is not usually seen from human eyes.
