For this shot, I set up a curtain between my camera and a remote flash. I projected the shadow of the chess set on to the curtain. I found that if I set the set up properly, there was too much space in the photo and the pieces did not appear sharp, so I pushed all the pieces into a bunch closer to the curtain.
