December Photo Challenge: Outdoor Flash As a Fill Light

Snorkeling at Sunset

By Adam Powers
We did not plan on snorkeling so late in the day in St. Lucia and were surprised when we looked up to see the sun was dipping below the horizon. My camera was a waterproof Canon Powershot D10, which we used almost exclusively for underwater pictures. At the surface, I turned the flash on to counter the back light from the sunset, tried to set up the angle as best I could while treading water…and just got lucky. I used auto contrast and color from Picasa, but that did not change much at all.
  • Camera: Canon Powershot D10
  • Focal Length: 6mm
  • Shutter Speed: 1/320 sec.
  • Lens: 35mm
  • ISO: 125
  • Aperture (F-Stop): f/8
