Lady's Slipper
By Mark Shegda
The Pink Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium acaule) is a member of the orchid family and grows wild throughout North America. They get their name from the pink slipper-like pouch (labellum) of the flower. These flowers grow wild in the woods near my house. For this shot I was laying prone on a bed of moss shooting into the rising sun. I used fill flash to light the front side of the pouch complimenting the dramatic backlight provided by the sun.
