December Photo Challenge: Ruins

Final Stand

By Sera Marshall
Hisarköy is situated in the province of Ayfonkarahisar, which is ancient Phrygia. The village is on the site of what was the third largest Byzantine city: Amorium. The speed of urbanisation in Turkey over the past 20 years has lead to mass migration from rural areas to cities. The elderly lady is one of a handful of villagers left. Everything around her is falling apart and slowly disintegrating. Her community, her home, her way of life, her health. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
