  • Friday Photo Quiz

Oh, that’s just so easy. To win, you’ve got to also explain in 10 words or less why this book is historically significant. Good luck!—David Schonauer

We received a few correct answers to last week’s quiz question. (The big camera was used to photograph a steam train onto photo plates measuring 4 ½ by 8 feet.)

  • It's in the Cards

Among the enduring art forms in the photo world are self-promotion postcards — and we see a lot of them here at American Photo. These range from seasonal greetings touting a photographer's work and wit to notices of new projects to eye-catching invitations. Many of them are what we endearingly call A few weeks ago, we received a postcard that took artsy-f**tsiness to new heights. The card consisted of a blurry picture on one side, with my name and the American Photo address on the other. (Other staffers received the same.) No return address, no credit, no ID.

  • Workshop Season

International Expeditions emphasize better photography through understanding of the flora, fauna, and cultures being captured. Respected nature photographers such as Wolfgang Kaehler, Rosanne Pennella, and Kevin Schafer will help students uncover the native beauty of Tanzania, Brazil, Greenland, and the Amazon.

We've recently received several notices about summer and fall workshops, so I thought I'd pass them along.

  • Discovering Bradford Washburn's Powerful Mountain Photography

We noted in January that famed mountaineer, photographer, and cartographer Bradford Washburn had died at age 96. If you want to read a passionate recounting of his life, pick up the April 2007 issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine. The article about Washburn is by David Roberts, a writer and mountaineer who knew Washburn well. (Roberts wrote about Washburn in 1983 for American Photographer magazine.) Washburn’s images are superbly reproduced in the issue.

  • A New Reality-TV Show Based on Photography?

Bravo is the home of the hit “Project Runway” (in which would-be fashion designers compete to have their collections spotlighted at fashion week in New York and in Elle magazine) and other such shows.

Attention all would-be superstar photographers! Variety.com reports that the Bravo cable channel is developing a reality-TV show focusing on photography.  (Go here.)

  • The Condor and the Egg

I'm just saying, I love condors. The photograph is credited to Mike Wallace/ZSSD via AP. This is a shot I wish I could have been there for.—David Schonauer

Okay, the photos of the condor egg recently found in Mexico have been seen.

  • Shoot This Travel Cover

The Grand Prize package is valued at $10,000 and includes a camera and an all-inclusive vacation package. Sixteen finalists will also win cameras and other prizes, and their photographs will be featured in a special travel portfolio in the issue.

  • A Tale of Two Photos

Associated Press photographer Gerald Herbert snapped a low-angle view of the president leaving the podium following the briefing. The picture does a good job in capturing the forcefulness of Bush as a commander in chief engaged in an intense bout of political brinkmanship with congress. I found the picture at washingtonpost.com.

Sometimes photography is like real estate.

  • Where to Go and What to See

    Check the link for details.

This week's list is short and sweet, so I'm inclined to keep my recommendations equally succinct.

  • The Italian Paparazzi Scandal

If you're interested in all things paparazzi, there's an interesting story in the New York Times today about a brewing blackmail scandal in Italy involving a young photographer named Fabrizio Corona, a millionaire talent agent, various politicians, celebrities, and scantily-clad TV dancers. (Go here for the article.) Hey, Italy is the home of the paparazzi.
