  • Christie's Photo Auction Wrap-Up

Going into last night’s auction of Horst images at Christie’s, there was some question about whether collectors would pony up significant wads of cash for what were, essentially, modern prints. The answer came midway through the auction, when a print of Horst’s famed “Mainbocher Corset, Paris, 1939” (left) sold for $240,000. When Philippe Garner, Christie’s International Director of Photography and 20th Century Arts, brought his gavel down to mark the sale, the entire room exhaled a pent-up tension.

  • Photo Stills, Nash & Young

Before the Nash show went public, at a reception for the artist April 19, a swirl of photo aficionados surrounded Nash and friends in a festive gathering. I came to the party with a fresh appreciation of Nash's visual work, as it's part of a special issue that American Photo is putting together (July/August) about musicians who are serious photographers.

  • The Magazine Rack

Editorial photography is alive and well, I'm happy to say. While it's getting nearly impossible to read the The New York Times Magazine these days, the publication remains a photographic destination. The portfolio by Richard Barnes in yesterday's edition was mind-boggling. The images show flight patterns of starlings over Rome. If you've seen the work you'll know what I'm talking about when I say they make you wonder about some sort of elemental connection between art and the natural world.
