  • Call For Entries: W. Eugene Smith Grant

    One of photography's most prestigious awards, the $30,000 grant is bestowed on a photographer whose work upholds the exemplified by the life and work of W. Eugene Smith. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money is also rewarded at the discretion of the jury.

    The 2007 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is now open for entries. Interested photographers can download an application online; entries deadline is July 15, 2007.

  • Tip of the Day: Skin Tones By the Numbers

    Rather than relying on a single point sample to get a good skin tone, take readings with the Eyedropper tool in Photoshop from several points on a subject: forehead, chin, and shoulders, then open the info palette and use these numbers as guidelines.  (R,G,B/C,M,Y,K)

  • Christopher Anderson Joins Newsweek

    Anderson was recently named Magazine Photographer of the Year in the POYi competition and won a $20,000 grant from Getty Images for his project on the socialist revolution in Latin America titled

    Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson has joined Newsweek as a contract photographer, joining Jonathan Torgovnik, Luc Delahaye, and fellow Magnum photojournalist Paolo Pellegrin in the elite club.

  • This Just In: Olympus Evolt E-410 Two Lens Outfit

    When the Olympus E-410 camera outfit was delivered to our lab a few days ago we did what we always do-- we opened the box and examined its contents. Tucked neatly into the small (9x6x6, LxWxH), compact box lies the E-410 camera body, Zuiko Digital lenses 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/4-5.6 (tested in January 2007), along with a battery, charger, cables, strap, software and manuals.

    When we first held the camera we immediately felt a difference in the grip, like something was missing. It was so slim it felt almost like an old film camera.
