Photographing the 37 ingredients that make up a Twinkie

People love taking photos of their food. Usually the shooter will go out of their way to make the dishes look as appetizing and well-prepared as possible. But, Dwight Eschliman has taken things in a whole different direction. For his project, 37 or So Ingredients he photographed each individual element that goes into making a single Twinkie. Frankly, the title is shocking enough on its own, but the images are even worse.

While there's nothing gross to look at in a traditional sense--none of them would make you cringe if looking out of context--clicking through the pages makes you realize how few of the 37 ingredients are actually, well, food.

You can see the whole series, along with more of Dwight's work on his portfolio site (don't bother clicking if you're using an iPad since the site is Flash-based). Then think about how much easier this whole project would have been had he picked a simpler foodstuff to photograph, such as a carrot or a homemade apple pie, which, while complicated, still falls far short of the 37 ingredient mark. But hey, at least the red apples would make for a nice still life.
