The big event this week is the kickoff to the International Center
of Photography's Year of Fashion. Beginning on Thursday, New Yorkers
will get to see three fashion-minded exhibits, ranging from fashion
photography's early days to its eccentric present. Edward Steichen—a
master of, and pacesetter for, early 20th century fashion imagery—is the focus of In High Fashion: The Conde Nast Years, 1923-1937. His glamorous photos of the models and stars of the day are sure to charm both the sartorially- and cinematically-inclined.
Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now
is a complete change of pace, presenting the avant garde work of
today's biggest names in transcendent fashion imagery. Juergen Teller,
Nick Knight, Tim Walker, Hedi Slimane, Mario Sorrenti, Bruce Weber,
Terry Richardson, Steven Meisel, and Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh
Matadin will all be featured, among many others. And if you're
wondering what inspires these cutting-edge, occasionally off-the-wall
ideas, ICP aims to please with This Is Not A Fashion Photograph, a gleaned collection of images from fine art photographers that have influenced the fashion world.
