When shooting a picture of two people be wary of exactly what's in focus. Sometimes, particularly with older film cameras, the autofocus mechanism zeros in on the background and overlooks the closer subjects entirely. Use the Focus Lock (usually that means pressing halfway down on the shutter release button) to lock focus on one of the subjects. If both are the same distance from the camera your shot will turn out perfect.
