08 greenland-thumbYour photography trek will begin in the town of Kangerlussuaq, situated just north of the Arctic Circle. Here is a place brimming with native wildlife, among them the distinctive musk oxen and caribou. Begin by boarding the MS Fram ship and then the PolarCirkel boats, which will usher you into the start of your travels through Greenland.

Travel with our mentors and try out all of the latest equipment from Nikon! Including world class digital SLRs, Nikkor lenses and the Coolpix line of Digital Cameras.

The following day you will arrive in Sismiut, the second most populated town and one that prides itself on its bustling fishing trade. Capture the fishermen amid their daily routine in this scenic port city nestled in rolling hills and mountains. Because this town dates back to the late 18th century, your camera will have ample opportunity to savor shots of architecture and culture rich in history.

Qeqertarsuaq (“largest island”) will greet you on your third day. On a guided tour through this quaint hunting and fishing village, you and your lens are sure to find unique subject matter here among the foothills of the breathtaking Basalt Mountains. Hiking up the range a bit, discover panoramic vistas of rising mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls. Dog sledding will be taking place on nearby Lygnmark Glacier, for those interested in capturing the historic sport in action.

Your portfolio will continue expanding on the following day in Uummannaq, a small village whose livelihood centers mostly on the halibut species of fish. Take a hiking tour here to nearby Santa’s cabin or venture over to Qilakitsoq, a place famous for its graves of 500 year-old mummies. Your subsequent arrival in Ukkusissat, a remarkably scenic mountain village, will cap off a day of filled with unique photographic adventures.

Next, come face to face with the grand glacier Eqip Sermia, whose towering and majestic expanse will wow your lens. Ilulissat, the third largest town in Greenland, will be the next stop. Fill your frame here with the enormous icebergs that populate the fjord, as well as the bustling on goings of the metropolitan town. Encounter Evighedsfjorden (“the eternity fjord”) the following day and take away images that show nature at its most awe-inspiring.

Note From Mentor

Greetings Greenland Aventurists,

Sailing by ship to the far north has always been a dream of mine, particularly Greenland. I think we're all in for incredible photographic opportunities. This will be my second Mentor Series aboard a Hurtigruten ship and you'll find their hospitality and attention to details second to none.

All of my life I've gravitated toward photographing subjects in the high arctic. There's many reasons but one of the most important is the quality of light you find in this part of the world. Normally, in more southern climates we all look forward to maybe 2-4 hours of golden light. In the arctic you can have 6-12 hours of the most premium quality light. We may be shooting at some strange hours but I promise it will be worth while.

Make sure you bring a rain jacket shell and a warm pile jacket to layer beneath it. Sunglasses are a must as well as sun screen. Other things to consider are a light pair of gloves, good walking or hiking shoes, rain pats and a warm shirt or two. On the photography side don't forget your polarizing filter, make sure you bring a system for cleaning your digital camera sensor, a tripod, graduated neutral density filters and plenty of memory cards. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Best wishes,
Dan
