RECAP
Montana was not on my radar as a travel destination until I saw the ad for the Mentor Series. What got my attention was the mix of an amazing landscape itinerary and the opportunity to travel with other people crazy about photography - with expert photographers leading the way! How could I not want to go? The promise of photographing at the North American Blackfeet Indian Days festival was the icing on the cake.

Travel with our mentors and try out all of the latest equipment from Nikon! Including world class digital SLRs, Nikkor lenses and the Coolpix line of Digital Cameras.
I was excited as I checked my gear, made sure I took longer walks with the dog to prepare for the hikes, thought about the most important questions and technical issues I wanted answered, and looked on the Internet for some background on the area.
As a former black and white film shooter who had transitioned over to digital I was aware that the hands-on approach the Mentor Series took was my best option for filling in the gaps in my information. I knew this approach to learning resulted in high retention of technical concepts because of my career in adult learning.
At first I was a little unsure if the number of people participating in the workshop would allow enough time for an exploration of my personal questions. That concern was quickly dispelled. Within the first day of the workshop all of my major questions were answered as the mentors and their very competent assistants gave me one-on-one tips in the field on how to try new techniques and improve desired results. They really knew their stuff regarding my camera and lenses, and I noticed this was true for the variety of equipment people brought.
As one of the few women in the group traveling without a partner my concerns about how I would be accepted were dispelled as the guys in my group welcomed me as one of the gang.
Did I get some memorable photos? I think so. Would I recommend this trip? Absolutely!
