Joe McNally is a freelance photographer who shoots assignments for magazines, advertising agencies, and graphic design firms in the U.S. and abroad. He began his career in the early seventies and has an extensive background shooting for a variety of magazines. He became a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated in 1985. Joe then went on to shoot cover stories for National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, New York Magazine, and GEO. In 1994, Joe was appointed Life magazine’s first staff photographer in more than 23 years where he remained until 1998.

Pictures of the Year awarded him in First Place in Magazine Illustration in 1988, and for Product Illustration in 1993. In 1996 the World Press Photo Foundation awarded him Third Prize for People in the News, in 1997 a First Prize in Portraits, in 1998 a Third prize in The Arts, and in 2000 a Second Prize in Science & Technology. Photo District News awarded him with a Gold Prize in Magazine Photography in 1997. Also that year, he received a First Prize in General Editorial from American Photo, a Gold Award from The Art Directors Club, and an Award of Excellence from Communication Arts. In 1998, Joe was selected as the winner of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for outstanding magazine photography, and received an Award of Excellence from Communication Arts. In 2000, and 2001, Joe was again a recipient of an Award of Excellence from Communication Arts, and was also honored both years by Applied Arts Magazine. In 2002, Joe was awarded placement in the prestigious book, Graphis.

In addition to teaching at the Eddie Adams workshop for 11 years, Joe has lectured at the NPPA Flying Short Course, the National Geographic Masters of Contemporary Photography Series, the Smithsonian Institute Masters of Photography, Rochester Institute of Technology, Maine Photo Workshops, and has taught at the Disney Institute. He has worked on numerous “Day in the Life” projects, and was a featured exhibitor at the 1991 Festival of Photojournalism in Perignan, France.

In the aftermath of September 11th, Joe conceived and photographed, “Faces of Ground Zero - Giant Polaroid Project”, which has became known as one of the most primary and significant artistic responses to the tragedy at the World Trade Center. The project was published in the best selling book One Nation, which raised over one million dollars for relief efforts. In addition, the Faces of Ground Zero life size Polaroids are currently on an international six city tour.

Joe was described by American Photo magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today” and was listed as one of the 100 most important people in photography.

In January 1999, Joe was honored by Kodak and Photo District News by being inducted into their Legends Online archive. In 2001, Nikon Inc. bestowed upon him a similar honor when he was placed on their website’s prestigious list of photographers noted as “Legends Behind the Lens”.
