Mentor Series - Worldwide Photo Treks!

Pennsylvania | 2005

For the Muschar’s taking pictures is almost like a family tradition.  The youngest in this lineage of photographers are brothers, Kevin and Matthew Muschar.  Kevin, almost 11, and Matthew, 9, joined their father, Jeff, on a Popular Photography photo workshop in the Pennsylvania Wilds.  “We went on that trip because we love photography, and nature. We also went because it was close by, since we live in Pittsburgh,” says Kevin.

It is hard to believe that such young boys can be so interested in photography, but as the Kevin explains, photography runs in their family, “My grandfather was a professional photographer and he got my Dad interested in photography.  My Dad got me interested by getting me a camera for Christmas 2002.”  Matthew also had other motivations, “I got interested in photography very recently, with the motivation that I'd get good slideshows for my videos.  I've enjoyed shooting videos for about the past year, and have made several DVD's on my Mac.”

Kevin and Matthew both seemed to have learned a lot on their photo workshop in Pennsylvania, and took full advantage of having professional photographers there to help them.  “I learned how to do panning. I was taking pictures of flowers when one of our mentors, Rick Sammon, asked me if I wanted to make my pictures more interesting. I said yes and he taught me how to do circular panning,” Kevin said.  Matthew also learned some new tricks, “I learned circular, vertical and horizontal panning.  That was the most fun thing I learned, I've been practicing that a lot.”

When asked what their favorite part of the workshop was Kevin said he enjoyed photographing the rattlesnakes, while Matthew liked tagging the bear.  The boys had wonderful times, and said they would love to go on more photo workshops. “I'd like to go to Montana for the elk and bison. I love wildlife, so that would be a great place to visit if they have a trip there in the summer,” Matthew says.  While Kevin explains that he would like to go to Poland, “I would like to go to Krakow, Poland because my Mom is from Poland.  My parents went to Krakow and told me all about it, and showed me beautiful pictures from there.”

Kevin and Matthew Muschar are promising young photographers emerging from a long history of photographers.  They both agreed on the fact that they would like to continue photography in the future, and boys, we can’t wait to see your future work.
