Nikon's AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR has a magnesium die-cast barrel to achieve a combination of lightweight and durable, dust- and moisture-resistant construction. The lens incorporates three ED elements, as well as a protective meniscus-type element that minimizes the ghosting caused by light reflecting between a camera's sensor and a typical flat protective glass element. The telephoto lens implements Nikon's VR II vibration reduction, which supports the Tripod stabilization mode available in Nikon's D3 and D300 SLRs. Tripod mode reduces vibration caused by mirror slap when the camera's shutter is released. Controls available on the barrels of the lens include a Focus Preset function that instantly recalls a preset focal point, a focus limiter that restricts AF-servo movement to a specific shooting-distance range, an AF-L switch for locking focus, and an AF-ON switch that engages the autofocus. The AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR will be available in November with a MSRP of $8,799.95.
