The Lensbaby 3G looks like a Lensbaby 2.0 that took an unexpected detour to Frankenstein's Lab. The 3G can be locked into position and even fine focused via those bolty knobby jobbers. The lens offers a different shooting experience than previous Lensbabies, allowing the user to lock the lens into position and experiment with deeper and shallower depth of field for a product shot. The fine focus adjustment allows you to shift the sweet spot's sharp focus location ever-so-slightly from the front of a bouquet of roses, to a petal towards the back with just a slight spin. You can position a model in the studio and experiment with lighting ratios, knowing that the focus of the LB3G will be exactly where you left it. Long exposures of flowing water and night scenery with shutter speeds longer than a fraction of a second are now possible, without worrying about having to hold the LB perfectly still all the while to keep it sharp.
The lens features a coated optical doublet glass element, a focal length of "about" 50mm, and f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, and f/22 interchangeable, magnetically levitating aperture disks. The 5.7oz lens has a diameter of 3.25in. and a length of 3in., making it very compact. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 12-inches.
The lens is available with Canon EF (EOS), Nikon F, Minolta Maxxum/Sony Alpha A, Pentax K/Samsung GX, Olympus E1/Panasonic Lumix DMC, and Leica R cameras. Automatic metering is possible in aperture priority mode for most SLR cameras except certain Nikon bodies including the D40, D50, D70, D70S, D80, D100, N50, N65, N70, N75, N80, Kodak 14N and ProN, and Fuji S1, S2, and S3.
The Lensbaby 3G is compatible with the Lensbaby Macro Kit ($29), the 0.6X Lensbaby Wide Angle/Macro Lens ($59), and the Lensbaby Wide Angle/Telephoto Kit ($89). The Lensbaby 3G is available now with a MSRP of $270.
