It wasn’t until his final year at Georgetown University, when Timothy Devine took his first visual art classes, that he found his true calling. "I was in the middle of writing my senior thesis as a Classics major when I enrolled in two photography courses as electives, and I immediately fell in love," he says. Since graduating in 2001, Devine has pursued a career in commercial photography, and he now has a client list that includes Business Week, Forbes, ESPN the Magazine, and U.S. News & World Report.

In detailed mise-en-scènes such as the one at left, Devine says he seeks to combine "the natural interaction of a subject within his or her environment" and his own interpretation of events. "I like to craft my images with a mix of staging and documentation," Devine says, "so they feel a little less posed and tell more of a story." He finds inspiration in Dutch and Flemish fine art -- by painters like Bruegel, Avercamp, and Vermeer -- and modern cinematography. "Film has always been an escape for me," he says, "and many of my pictures tend to take on a cinematic feel."

Without the benefit of a formal photo education, Devine adds that assisting has been a key part of his career development. "It’s given me insight into the business," he says. "I’ve witnessed relationships between photographers, clients, and subjects. Most of all, I’ve learned the gear -- what needs to get done and how to do it, for both small jobs and large ones."
