Along with several of his classmates from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, Mark Mahaney moved to New York in early September, 2001, to launch a career in photography. A few days after his arrival in the city came the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Then he got a job as an intern "for a really pretentious, well known fashion photographer" that lasted about three weeks before he’d had enough. Finally, his luck turned: He got another interning job, this time at the studio of portraitist Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, where he has stayed for the last four years, progressing up the ladder from third to first assistant. "I do everything from answering phones to retouching all his images to working on shoots to talking with clients," he says. "It’s been a great, solid learning experience." Mahaney’s own work -- landscapes inspired by the commercial growth of his hometown of St. Charles, Illinois, as well as sophisticated portraiture of artists and others -- earned him a place in Print magazine’s 2005 New Visual Artists Competition, and his images have appeared in Seed and Nylon magazines.
