While his father, Walter Iooss, is a famed sports photographer, Bjorn Iooss says he’d much rather shoot other subjects. "My mother has no interest in sports, and I think I inherited her gene on that," Bjorn says with a laugh. Though he shot Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis celebrating victory in the 2006 Super Bowl, Iooss is more focused on portraiture with an atmospheric, painterly feel. "I’m really into art history," Iooss says, "and I tend to look towards painters for inspiration: Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Sargent, and Degas." Other influences include photographers Raphael Mazzucco and Annie Leibovitz, both of whom Iooss has worked for. "Assisting has taught me how to be the captain of your ship," he says. "You have to treat everyone with respect." His favorite occupational perk is the travel. "You never know where you are going next -- L.A., Vancouver, Toronto, Mexico, Iceland, Kenya, Bahamas," he says. "When I get home for a week I almost feel stagnant." Meanwhile, he has to juggle assisting jobs with his own work for clients including Canon, Golf Digest, and TV Guide. "One of the great things about assisting is meeting people," he says, "and I always make it a point to show folks my photographs after working with them."
