Amy Gayeski began taking photography seriously after she started crying at a job interview during her junior year in college. She had spent three years studying engineering at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and was being recruited by a major architecture firm for a summer job. "That’s when I lost it and had a meltdown," she says. "I suddenly knew that being an architect wasn’t right for me—I couldn’t sit in an office cubicle all summer." She had taken a photo course for fun and enjoyed it, so a year later she decided to enroll at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. "I loved it there, and actually was thinking about getting a master’s degree," she says, "but the financial reality set in, and it was time for me to go out into the real world and get a job." For Gayeski that meant driving down the highway to Los Angeles, where she began assisting a number of photographers, including advertising photographer Shawn Michienzi. Gayeski’s own portfolio contains a number of images that spoof ad imagery in ingenious ways. "I like to have fun with ideas," she says.
