A native of Barcelona, Spain, Adriana Lopez Sanfeliu moved to New York in 2002 to pursue a career in photography. Up until then, however, she had never taken a formal photography class. She enrolled in classes with Eugene Richards at the Maine Photographic Workshops and took a course at the school of the International Center of Photography, for which she began shooting a long term project in Spanish Harlem. After that, she settled into jobs assisting several photographers, including Gilles Larrain, who specializes in portraiture and fine art work, and celebrity portraitist Peter Freed. “I didn’t want to study anymore; I wanted to work,” she says. “As an assistant I got hands on experience in photography -- just learning how to handle yourself on a shoot.” Recently, however, she realized it was time to strike out on her own documentary work, including a project on gypsies in Spain. “There’s a moment you have to stop if you have a personal vision,” she says. “You know that time has come when you take an assisting job and you just can’t wait until it’s over."
