The Short List

Photographers whose work we like...
whose vision we admire...
whose humor charms us

March 2004

This Short List might well be called Relics.

Old airplanes in storage. Cowboys working the range much the way they did a more than a century ago. People who tend ancient steam tractors. Even Lori Nix’s imaginary disaster landscapes have a certain archaeological feel to them.

Which is not to say that they aren’t fun, or lively, or startling, or whimsical. They do what photography does best: freeze a certain moment, allowing us to go back and explore at will. These picture show that photography is the ultimate Second Look—a two-dimensional time machine.

As always, the basic rule for The Short List is that there are no rules. We’re presenting work that we think is amusing (or troubling), straightforward (or manipulated), offbeat (or classical). We think you’ll find them well worth a second look.
