HUMPBACK WHALE WATCHING
When: Throughout February. Where: Maui, HI. What: This is a peak time to photograph humpbacks as they mate, calve, and nurse their young in the waters off Hawaii. Maui is one of the best spots to book a boat tour to see these majestic mammals. Tip: You don't know how far or close a humpback will surface, so if you can, bring two cameras with a different-length lens on each (e.g., a 24-105mm and a 100-400mm). Info: www.visitmaui.com; 800-525-6284.
DAYTONA BEACH BIKE WEEK
When: February 29-March 9. Where: Daytona Beach, FL. What: A colorful occasion for candids, motorcyclists from across the nation roll into this community to camp out, mingle, and check out each other's gear. Tip: Don't let the tough-guy exteriors of Harley riders scare you off -- the attendees are friendly and accustomed to being photographed. You can take successful portraits by simply asking politely. Info: www.daytonachamber.com; 386-255-0981.
56TH ANNUAL PACIFIC ORCHID EXPOSITION
When: February 28-March 2. Where: Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, CA. What: More than 150,000 flowers from around the globe will be on display. Known for their beauty and incredible diversity, orchids shown in this event range from 20 feet high to the size of a pin, and come in a dazzling array of colors and shapes. Tip: Friday is the best day -- it's much less crowded. High windows afford available-light shooting, and tripods are allowed (though a monopod may make you less of a menace). The tiniest orchids are the most exquisite, so bring a macro lens and extension tubes. Info: www.orchidsanfrancisco.org/poe.html; 415.665.2468.
