LockCircle has just unveiled the Prime Circle XE at NAB 2013. This set of cinema prime lenses offer something we haven't seen before — remote controlled aperture. The Prime Circle XE System will be available in 10 different focal lengths from 10mm to 135mm, including "makro 50 and makro 100mm.(sic)", and each of the lenses aperture setting can be altered from up to 300 feet away using a remote control system.

Always on the lookout for exploitable market niches, both Nikon and Canon have been building out the middle of their lens catalogs with f/4 enthusiast versions of the expensive f/2.8 zooms favored by pro shooters. Lenses such as Nikon’s 16–35mm and 200–400mm f/4, and Canon’s 17–40mm, 24–70mm, and 70–200mm f/4 all share basic traits: They’re more compact, lighter, significantly less pricey, and (obviously) slower than their f/2.8 counterparts.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced a Wi-Fi only version its Galaxy Camera, no longer requiring you to be beholden to a wireless carrier to share the photographs you took. The EK-GC110 is all but identical to the EK-GC100, except that it lacks the 4G data chip, limiting you to Wi-Fi rather than a cellular networks.

The widest of Canon’s recent barrage of wide-angle, full-frame prime lenses, this 24mm f/2.8 IS USM ($807, street)—along with the 28mm f/2.8, and new 35mm f/2—forms a three-tiered team, notable for compact proportions, reasonable pricing, and image stabilization across the board. Significantly lighter and more compact than Canon’s com-parable nonstabilized f/1.4 primes, all three newcomers are also far less expensive.
