For photographers who don’t care to carry a bag full of lenses in the field, Sigma is offering a single, affordable piece of glass to substitute. Hitting the market in October, the 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM has an effective zoom range of 27-450mm, covering a majority of the focal lengths many photographers commonly need. It will be available in Sigma, Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony mounts for the street price of $579.

The lens comes equipped with a newly developed optical stabilization (OS) system, a new Hyper Sonic Motor (HMS) for quiet autofocusing and macro-zoom capability for closeups. It will also be compatable with Sigma’s USB dock for updating firmware and changing focus parameters using Sigma’s Optimization Pro software.

Though it may not turn the heads of many high-end professionals, this new lens could be an enticing option for those buying into their first interchangable lens system.
